Cistern Construction Instructions

Materials List:

(6) 2" x 4" x 8' Studs, (3) 3/4" x 4' x 8' Plywood, 200-2" Wood Screws,

20- 5” Deck Screws, 20- 3” Deck Screws

STEP 1: Prep

Cut (4) 2" x 4" x 4'-0” (4) 2" x 4" x 3'-9” (4) 2" x 4" x 3'-5” (6) 3/4" x 4' x 4'

Lay the parts out as per the plans to get an idea of how the framing goes together. Next mark the parts. (P) For the 4 posts. (R) For the 4 Rails. Mark the Rails accordingly (example) TRF- Top Rail Front. And TRS-Top Rail Side. BRF- Bottom Rail Front. Etc....

STEP 2: Assembly

Using the 3” and 5” Deck Screws and wood Glue, Assemble the Frame.(As per the Plans.) Remember to put the (2) TRF and the (2) TRS ¾” below the top of the Post. This is for the inset Top Piece or Lid. After the Frame is complete set the Lid onto the Frame and trace the outline of the Posts. (This is for the notched corners of the Lid) Put the Lid to the side and proceed attaching the Bottom and sides to the Frame using the Wood Glue and the 2” Wood Screws.

STEP 3: Liner Prep

Take a regular Dish towel and completely wipe or rub down the entire inside of the box including the Framing. This is to find any Spurs, Screw Heads, or Splinters that might puncture the Liner. Sand, File, and/or remove anything that might puncture the Liner.

STEP 4: Liner Installation

Drop the Liner into the Cistern Box and unfold pulling the walls of the Liner upward and drape over the outer edge of the Cistern Box. A little vertical stretch (1 or 2 Inches overall) is not a problem. Wall Fittings (Bulkhead Fittings) should be added after the liner is fully inserted into the Cistern Box and any stretching of the liner from the floor upward has been accomplished. This may mean a few inches of water would be placed into the liner to complete the stretch.

STEP 5: Bulkhead Fitting Installation

See our Water Tank Liner Flange Installation Web Page. Please NOTE: The Installation page focuses on a Steel Tank however the same practices apply to the wooden Tank but without the Sheet Metal Plate.
